The basa fish, Pangasius bocourti, is a type of catfish in the family Pangasiidae. Basa are native to the Mekong River Delta in Vietnam and Chao Phraya basin in Thailand. These fish are important food fish with an international market. They are often labeled in the North America as basa fish or bocourti. In the UK, the species is known mainly as Vietnamese river cobbler, with basa also being used on occasion. In Europe, these fish are commonly marketed as pangassius or panga. Other related shark catfish may occasionally be falsely labeled as basa fish, these fish include Pangasius hypophthalmus (iridescent shark) and Pangasius pangasius (yellowtail catfish).

Body

The body of a basa fish is stout and heavy. The rounded head is broader than it is long, the blunt snout having a white band on its muzzle.

Food and Spawning

Basa fish feed on plants. These fish spawn at the onset of the rainy season.

Is Basa Fish dangerous? I just bought some from the grocery?
Q. Is Basa Fish dangerous? I just bought some from the grocery? and then when I searched recipes online there were some warnings about the safety of this fish. Is it dangerous?
Asked by Gabrielle B - Sat Jun 13 18:50:29 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is not dangerous, more that it is not the best quality as it is an imported from asian countries and retrieved usually from fish "farms", overpopulated water, not best quality water etc. If it has been imported, it would have had to passed tests ensuring it was not chemically a danger so really it should be safe to eat, just keep this in mind for next time you buy fish.

A. I love basa! Try this one: Dry the fish and season with salt and pepper on both sides, Dip in flour and remove excess, dip in egg beat with a little water, then coat with seasoned bread crumbs (I make my own from the unused end of French bread and season it with salt, pepper, oregano and fresh parsley). Pan fry the fish in a mixture of any vegetable oil and butter over medium high heat. Preheat the pan then add the oil and butter. You want a pan (or pans) large enough to hold the fish in one layer, and enough butter and oil to coat the bottom of the pan generously. You will turn the fish only once when the crust on the bottom is nicely browned, you can tell by looking at the edge of the crumb topping or lifting the fish just a little. [cont.]
